About Canvey Wick
Canvey Wick is a truly unique nature reserve on Canvey Island, showing how wildlife can thrive in unexpected places.
Although it was once a brownfield site, it is now recognised as one of the most important places in the UK for rare invertebrates. In fact, it has been described as “a little brownfield rainforest” because of its exceptional biodiversity.
Wildlife and habitats
Despite its industrial past, Canvey Wick supports an astonishing variety of wildlife.
Surveys have shown that the site has some of the highest biodiversity per square foot in the UK, particularly for endangered invertebrates such as bees, beetles, and other insects.
This success is a powerful example of how post‑industrial landscapes can become valuable habitats for nature.
Protected status
Canvey Wick was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in February 2005.
It was the first brownfield site in the UK to receive this designation specifically for its invertebrates, highlighting its national importance for conservation.
Management and partnership
The site is managed in partnership with the RSPB, supporting its long‑term protection and careful stewardship.
