About Heybridge Wood

Heybridge Wood is a 30‑acre ancient woodland located within the Westcombe Park development on the edge of Maldon.

This protected woodland is an important natural asset, carefully managed to preserve its ecological value, historic character, and role within the local community.

The Land Trust has been appointed to care for and manage the site, ensuring it remains a thriving and accessible green space for years to come.

Green space and management

Heybridge Wood forms a key part of the wider Westcombe Park community, where over 1,000 new homes are being developed alongside high‑quality green spaces.

The woodland is managed in line with an agreed Woodland Management Plan, developed in partnership with Maldon District Council and Natural England.

This includes:

  • Protecting and enhancing wildlife habitats
  • Maintaining the character of the ancient woodland
  • Creating safe access through footpaths and cycle routes
  • Supporting long‑term sustainability of the site

Community and wellbeing

Heybridge Wood is designed to be a space for both nature and people.

Alongside conservation work, the site will offer opportunities for:

  • Outdoor learning and environmental education
  • Community activities and events
  • Improving wellbeing through connection with nature
