About Haig
Haig is a unique coastal site with a rich industrial history and beautiful natural scenery.
Once home to Cumbria’s largest coal mine, the Haig Colliery closed in 1986 after tunnels were driven over 4 miles beneath the Solway Firth and out under the Irish Sea. For many years, the site remained underused until restoration began in 2002. It was later transferred to the Land Trust in 2008.
